During the annual Amsterdam Light Festival, Artis Zoo opened its doors in the evening. In collaboration with NEXT Empire and Good Snooze, we developed a location-based app that allowed visitors to explore the zoo in the dark.

The Colors of the Night

The challenge was to make ARTIS Zoo’s animals visible despite the pitch-dark night. We decided to bring the animals to life on your smartphone using GPS. An interactive map shows your live position and helps you wander through ARTIS. The app also enhanced senses like hearing, smelling, and feeling. The dreamy design of the animals in the app turned a visit to ARTIS into a true sleepwalking experience.

Despite the cold winter nights, over 13,000 people visited ARTIS in the dark. This made the campaign one of ARTIS's most successful winter campaigns.

An Animal-Friendly Concept

Not every animal is nocturnal. To avoid disturbing the animals at night, we designed a special night mode with an animal-friendly way to light your path. This interface was tested late in the evening with a small group, ensuring that even the non-nocturnal animals could enjoy their well-deserved rest.
